“The moment I held her in my arms, I knew that she is my daughter, who found her way into my arms and heart through the miracle of adoption.”
The wait was long. Sonja and Fabio dreamed of starting their family through adoption and waited…and waited…and waited. After three years of waiting, their dreams have finally come true. Beautiful newborn, Kathryn Marie, is so fortunate to have these two incredibly inspiring, caring people as her parents and they are so blessed to have such a sweetheart of a daughter. I could not have been more honored to be asked to photograph this adorable little girl and this incredibly special time in all of their lives.
The thing about this family is that they radiate joy and almost moved us to tears during their family photo session. The look on their faces is one of ultimate gratitude and though their journey has been emotionally challenging and difficult at times, through it all they have always continued to hope, dream and believe. Because of the inspiration they are to so many people, I’ve asked them if they wouldn’t mind sharing some words of advice to those who might be where they were three years ago. Thank you, Sonja and Fabio, for always having an open heart to help others and congratulations on a dream come true!
Interview with baby Kathryn’s mom:
Since there is so much information out there about adoption and it can be a little overwhelming to know where to start, would you mind sharing your experience with us?
“We were too busy to become an expert so we focused on finding the right professional help. We found an adoption counselor who narrowed the choices down for us. At her suggestion, we interviewed agencies. We listened to one another about which agency felt like the right fit for us and carefully checked references of our chosen agency. We agreed to engage the professionals, made an appointment to sign and application and paid an application fee. Together we built the plan. We gathered the needed financial documents, personal reference letters and created a profile page to be shared with prospective birth parents. We learned everything we could about the process and attended an Adoption Readiness seminar while listening to other people’s experiences and continuing to dream on our own.”
What advice would you give to others seeking to adopt?
“Be prepared to have your dream come true. Keep praying and working on the plan. Plan for the life you want and choose your help well. Take action when the time is right and never give up.”
