Interview with Harvey’s mom:
What has surprised you about motherhood so far?
“As exhausting as it is being up every 2 hours to feed the baby, changing countless diapers, and functioning on a few naps a day (if that!), when I look at my baby, every frustrating thought leaves my mind and I can’t be upset. He is so incredibly amazing and we would do anything for him.”
What is your favorite little detail about your baby?
“Harvey has big, beautiful eyes and since he was so small when he was born, they looked especially large. I definitely see features he has inherited from me. He has my ears and hands and we have the same cry face (and thanks to post-pregnancy hormone fluctuations and exhaustion, there have been times I’ve been able to compare them in real time. Haha!). Alternatively, when he is sleeping and peaceful, he looks like dad.”
What was it like seeing your baby for the first time?
“I was able to see him as he emerged and it was so surreal. I remember laughing, turning to my husband and saying ‘This is so weird!'”
Did your baby look like what you expected?
We were expecting Harvey to be a lot bigger based on what we were told during our sonograms. He ended up showing up a couple of weeks early so he was a little guy, which was so surprising!
Any advice you would like to share with a new mommy or mommy-to-be?
“No matter how much you prepare, there are definitely times you have to roll with the punches. Avoid reading scary stories about worst-case scenarios online and don’t listen to people who spend a lot of time commiserating about the different aspects of parenthood. Of course there will always be challenges, but instead of focusing on them, just look forward to enjoying your baby at each stage. After our son was born, one of my friends sent me some helpful advice and reminded me of the quote, ‘The days are long, but the years are short’ and I repeat it to myself daily so I remember to savor every fleeting moment.”
